National Foot & Ankle Center offers treatment and care to patients from Potomac, Maryland and Friendship Heights, Washington DC who suffer from painful and unattractive bunions.
Bunions are bony lumps that form on the side of the foot beneath big toe and cause foot pain. The bony hump pushes the big toe inward toward the other toes. The joint where the toe bends when walking is also affected by a bunion and it can make walking uncomfortable. Bunions are also susceptible to additional pressure and friction caused by certain shapes of shoes and how they rub on the toe. Calluses often develop on the side of the big toe where the shoe is rubbing.
Bunions are caused by a variety of reasons. Some of the more common causes of bunions include injury, birth defects, certain types of arthritis, or an inherited foot type. An occupation that requires you to stand for prolonged periods of time may also cause a bunion to form due to the excess pressure on your feet. Experts disagree on whether or not footwear that is too tight or too narrow can the cause a bunion, though poorly fitting footwear can certainly aggravate the condition through increased pressure and friction.
Based on the evaluation performed by our team, if the condition is found to be severe the doctor will often suggest surgery. The operation is recommended when the patient is not able to participate in normal everyday life because of the pain. The surgeon will readjust the bone beneath the big toe by making an incision into the ligaments surrounding the joint. Part of the joint, bone, or some of the soft tissue might be extracted during the operation. The bone may be fused to prevent it from moving back to the unwanted position. Wires and screws are sometimes used to hold the big toe in place when healing. Excess bone might also be shaved down and excised during in surgery. Typically, bunion surgery lasts approximately an hour, depending on the severity of the bunion.
